What is the Gospel?

The Power of God

In the Book of Romans we see that the Apostle Paul writes about how the Gospel was promised beforehand through the prophets in the Holy Scriptures. He declares in Romans 1 that the Scriptures foretell that regarding the Son of God (Jesus), He would be descended from David (with regard to his human ancestry) however he is declared with power through His Spirit of Holiness to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Then the apostle Paul says, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believe... For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from the first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith."

So the power of God to raise Christ Jesus from the dead is what declared to the world who He, Jesus, was. He was not like any other man. He was in reality God, who put on flesh, so that He could come and shed his blood as a sacrifice for all people everywhere who would call on Him. This means that the power of God to raise Christ Jesus from the dead is implied for us, as well. When we come to Jesus and give him our lives, we literally die to our sinful nature and our spirit is made alive, anew, now filled with the Life and Spirit of God! It is no longer I who lives, but He lives through me. So we literally experience a resurrection from the dead and a resurrection to new life. Colossians 2:13-15 says, "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."  Again, this is the POWER OF GOD and our lives can now declare who Jesus is, by what He has accomplished in us!

The Gospel reveals a responsible and loving Father, who knew that mankind would require a redeemer in order to come back into right relationship with his Creator. Wonder of wonders, He prepared the way for that redemption! What a glorious gospel of love and forgiveness, of healing and transformation, of Father and Son/Daughter relationship. We can now cry "Abba, Father"!
